3 die in Kennedy ramp crash
Three Northwest Side men died Saturday when their car went out ofcontrol on the Ontario feeder ramp to the Kennedy Expy., an IllinoisState Police spokesman said. The car driven by Juan Navarro, 21, ofthe 4900 block of West Montana, struck a median strip and a flashingyellow beacon about 4:30 a.m. Also killed when they were thrown fromthe car were Selim A. Aich, 22, and Eduardo Rios, 21, police said.None of the men was wearing a seat belt, police said.Thousands of homes, businesses without powerAbout 21,750 homes and businesses remained without power Saturdaybecause of storms that raged through the region Friday afternoon, aCommonwealth Edison spokeswoman said. The storms, which knocked downtrees and power lines, caused 150,000 homes to lose power, but Edisondeployed 450 crews to restore power to most of them. As of Saturdayevening, customers without power included 750 in Chicago; 15,000 insouth and west Cook County, DuPage, Will and Kankakee counties; 4,500in north and northwest Cook County and Lake and McHenry counties, and1,500 in Kane and DeKalb counties.2 Inland Steel workers killed by molten steelTwo Inland Steel workers were killed when they were drenched withmolten steel at an East Chicago, Ind., plant. Keith C. Laczi, 42, ofGriffith, Ind., died Saturday at Loyola University Medical Center inwest suburban Maywood, the Cook County medical examiner's officesaid. C.J. Jones Jr., 61, of Gary, Ind., who had worked for Inlandfor 27 years, died Friday night at the University of Chicago Hospitalburn unit. Jones and Laczi were standing next to a ladle loaded withapproximately 110 tons of molten steel Friday when some fell from theladle, drenching them, officials said.
