NSW: New ID card meets privacy concerns
A peak privacy body says it approves of a new identification card in New South Wales
-- as long as it remains voluntary.
Today's launch of the Birth Card means people born in NSW have the option of a new
form of photo ID.
The Birth Card is a credit-sized card with the same information as a birth certificate
extract -- full name, place and date of birth, signature and photo.
New South Wales Privacy Commissioner CHRIS PUPLICK says it's important that the card is optional.
Attorney General BOB DEBUS says it will be a convenient form of generic photographic
identification for those who, for various reasons, do not have drivers licenses or passports.
